Best Steam Machine Alternatives (2026): Mini PCs for Your Steam Library, by Budget

Valve’s Steam Machine finally shipped in June 2026, but at $1,049 without a controller, sold through a reservation queue, it is not the cheap living-room PC many people hoped for. A mini PC can do the same job: boot straight into Steam’s big-screen mode, run SteamOS or Bazzite, and sit quietly under the TV. This guide compares the real options by budget, using published game benchmarks, and says plainly where each one falls short of Valve’s box.

In short

No mini PC with integrated graphics matches the Steam Machine’s dedicated 28-unit GPU, but most of a Steam library does not need it. A Radeon 780M or 890M mini PC runs demanding games at about 40 to 50 fps at 1080p low and lighter games far faster, with no reservation queue. The Peladn HO5 (Radeon 890M) is the best all-rounder because its OCuLink port takes a desktop graphics card later. The ACEMAGIC K5 with a Ryzen 5 7640HS is the budget entry for indie and older games. Only Strix Halo or a mini PC with a real graphics card plays in the Steam Machine’s class, at a similar or higher price. Install Bazzite for the console feel; keep Windows for games with kernel-level anti-cheat.

Best all-rounder: Peladn HO5, Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 with Radeon 890M, USB4 and OCuLink.

Budget entry: ACEMAGIC K5 with Ryzen 5 PRO 7640HS and Radeon 760M graphics.

This guide replaces two older articles

It merges our 2025 Steam Machine preview, whose price and release predictions turned out wrong, and our “console killer setup” build. The facts that still matter, the Steam Machine’s real specifications and the Strix Halo option, are below with sources.

What the Steam Machine gives you for $1,049

A 6-core Zen 4 processor, a 28-unit RDNA 3 graphics chip with its own 8GB of GDDR6, 16GB of DDR5 and SteamOS, for $1,049 (512GB) or $1,349 (2TB) without a controller, or $1,128 and $1,428 with the new Steam Controller.

Valve announced the new Steam Machine on November 12, 2025, opened a randomized reservation queue on June 22, 2026 and began sending purchase invitations the week of June 29. The price landed far above early guesses, and Valve blamed memory costs, which have hit every PC maker this year (see our mini PC processor guide for what it means for mini PCs). The Gadgeteer put it this way: the price “mostly reflects 2026’s hardware costs rather than a permanent Valve markup”. It also expected the queue to run through the rest of 2026, so check Valve’s store for current availability.

The box is a 6-inch cube (about 156 × 152 × 162 mm, 2.6 kg) with an internal power supply, Wi-Fi 6E, Gigabit Ethernet, DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0. Its graphics run at up to 2.45 GHz with a 110W budget, close to a Radeon RX 7600M laptop GPU. Valve first promised 4K at 60 fps with upscaling, then changed the wording before launch to “up to 4K gaming with FSR 4.1”. For its own “Verified” label on the Steam Machine, Valve asks for 1080p at 30 fps, according to IGN.

Compute units are only a rough guide across generations. Integrated GPUs also share memory bandwidth with the processor, which limits them more than the unit count suggests.

Published game results: what each GPU really runs

At 1080p low, the Radeon 780M and 890M run Cyberpunk 2077 and Baldur’s Gate 3 at about 40 to 50 fps, the 760M at about 30, and Strix Halo’s Radeon 8060S at well over 100.

Source: Notebookcheck (760M and 8060S benchmark pages, Strix Point analysis of July 2024). Devices, power limits and game versions differ, so treat gaps under 10% as noise. We found no independent Steam Machine frame rates we could verify, so it is not in the table.

Lighter games run much faster. ETA Prime measured about 82 fps in Forza Horizon 5 at 1080p high on a Minisforum mini PC with a Ryzen 7 255 (Radeon 780M), and 109 fps at 1080p medium on a Beelink SER9 with the Radeon 890M, both as reported by Notebookcheck. At the top, RandomGaminginHD measured Strix Halo in the Minisforum MS-S1 Max at 66.8 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p high, 82.2 fps in Red Dead Redemption 2 and 59.6 fps in Elden Ring, which is capped at 60 (Tom’s Hardware).

For scale, GamersNexus measured a Steam Deck OLED at 44.6 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 720p low with FSR upscaling. A 780M mini PC reaches about the same frame rate at 1080p without upscaling: a clear step up from a Deck, but not a 4K console.

Budget pick: ACEMAGIC K5 (Ryzen 5 PRO 7640HS)

The cheapest route to Steam on a TV with real Radeon graphics: fine for indie, older and esports games at 1080p, about 30 fps at 1080p low in the heaviest titles, and no way to add a graphics card later.

The Ryzen 5 PRO 7640HS has six Zen 4 cores and Radeon 760M graphics with 8 compute units. Notebookcheck’s 760M average is 58 fps in F1 24 at 1080p low, and 31 fps in Cyberpunk 2077, so racing, platformers and older hits run well, while new AAA games need the lowest settings. In the K5, memory is soldered at 16GB and there is no USB4 or OCuLink, so the GPU you buy is the GPU you keep. Our ACEMAGIC K5 review covers the rest of the box.

Best value with an upgrade path: Radeon 780M and OCuLink

A Ryzen 7 8845HS mini PC with OCuLink, such as the GMKtec K8 Plus, adds 50% more graphics units than the 760M and a port for a desktop graphics card when you want more.

The Radeon 780M has 12 compute units and reached 44 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 and 41 fps in Baldur’s Gate 3 at 1080p low in Notebookcheck’s tests. Its OCuLink port is the real reason to choose it for gaming: it is the upgrade the Steam Machine does not offer. The BOSGAME M4 Plus is a similar option with a Ryzen 9 7940HS.

One practical point for a living room: noise. I use a GMKtec K8 Plus as my main PC for web development and spreadsheets, and its fan is clearly audible in performance mode in a quiet room, while the balanced mode is much calmer. Under a TV, plan on the balanced mode and give the box open air around its vents.

Best all-rounder: Peladn HO5 (Ryzen AI 9 HX 370)

The Radeon 890M is the fastest common integrated GPU below Strix Halo, and the HO5 pairs it with both USB4 and OCuLink: play at 1080p now, add a desktop card later.

Notebookcheck measured the 890M at 46 to 51.5 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 and about 45 fps in Baldur’s Gate 3 at 1080p low, a modest step over the 780M in those heavy games and a bigger one in lighter titles such as Forza Horizon 5. The HO5 adds 12 Zen 5 cores, dual 2.5GbE and Wi-Fi 7. Its 32GB of memory is soldered, which is enough for gaming for years.

Closest to a Steam Machine on paper: Strix Halo

The Ryzen AI Max+ 395’s Radeon 8060S has 40 compute units and plays Cyberpunk 2077 at about 67 fps at 1080p high, but Strix Halo mini PCs usually cost more than the Steam Machine.

This is the only integrated chip in the Steam Machine’s class. Tom’s Hardware, reporting RandomGaminginHD’s tests on the Minisforum MS-S1 Max, called it able to provide “butter-smooth 1080p performance in all the games he tested”. Prices depend heavily on memory, which makes Strix Halo hard to justify for gaming alone; it makes sense if you also want to run large AI models at home.

A real graphics card in a small box: Minisforum G1 Pro

If you want Steam Machine-class graphics or better in a compact case, a mini PC with a dedicated card, such as the Minisforum G1 Pro with a desktop-class RTX 5060, is the direct route.

The G1 Pro pairs a Ryzen 9 8945HX with a desktop-class GeForce RTX 5060. It is bigger than a typical mini PC and an NVIDIA card rules out official SteamOS, so plan on Bazzite (which ships NVIDIA drivers) or Windows. Our gaming hub compares it with the other dedicated-GPU options.

SteamOS, Bazzite or Windows?

Bazzite is the easiest way to get the Steam Machine experience on a mini PC today. SteamOS now installs on your own hardware but supports AMD graphics only, and Windows remains the safe choice for games with kernel-level anti-cheat.

  • SteamOS. Valve’s SteamOS 3.8, released in June 2026, opened installs on your own hardware, with AMD graphics only for now and still as a test channel, according to ComputingForGeeks. Reports differ on Intel graphics; NVIDIA is not supported. All the integrated picks above are AMD.
  • Bazzite. A Fedora-based system modeled on SteamOS, with atomic updates you can roll back and a mode that boots straight into Steam’s big-screen interface. It “comes with pre-installed proprietary Nvidia drivers”, so it also suits the G1 Pro or an eGPU.
  • Windows 11. It comes with every mini PC here and runs every launcher. Linux systems run most of the Steam catalog through Proton, but games with kernel-level anti-cheat are generally incompatible, as IGN noted in its SteamOS review. If you play those, stay on Windows and use Steam’s Big Picture mode.

The upgrade path: OCuLink and an external GPU

A desktop graphics card on OCuLink loses about 5 to 25% against the same card in a desktop, less with mid-range cards and at higher resolutions.

In its own test of the Minisforum DEG2 dock with an RTX 4090, Notebookcheck found performance “20 percent below a desktop system” depending on the game, partly because the mini PC’s processor differs from the desktop’s. Earlier tests reported by Notebookcheck measured a 9.8% loss in 3DMark Time Spy with an RTX 4070 Ti Super and up to 23% with an RTX 4090. That makes a 780M or 890M mini PC plus a mid-range card a credible path above the Steam Machine. Our OCuLink and eGPU guide explains the docks and cards that fit.

Steam Machine or a mini PC: which should you buy?

Buy the Steam Machine if you want a quiet, tuned console-style box and can get an invitation. Buy a mini PC if you want to spend less, start sooner, keep Windows, or upgrade later.

  • Indie, older and esports games on a TV: ACEMAGIC K5 (Radeon 760M).
  • Most of a Steam library at 1080p, with an upgrade path: GMKtec K8 Plus (780M) or Peladn HO5 (890M), both with OCuLink.
  • Steam Machine-class graphics without a card: Strix Halo, if you also use local AI.
  • The most gaming power in a small box: a dedicated-GPU mini PC such as the Minisforum G1 Pro.

FAQ

What is the best alternative to the Steam Machine?

For most people, a mini PC with Radeon 890M graphics and an OCuLink port, such as the Peladn HO5. It runs most Steam games at 1080p, ships with Windows and no reservation queue, and can take a desktop graphics card later. On a tight budget, a Ryzen 5 7640HS mini PC handles indie and older games.

Is a mini PC as fast as the Steam Machine?

Not with integrated graphics below Strix Halo. The Steam Machine has a 28-unit RDNA 3 GPU with 8GB of dedicated memory; a Radeon 890M has 16 units and shares system memory. Expect 1080p at low to medium settings in demanding games from a 780M or 890M mini PC, not 4K with upscaling.

Can a mini PC run SteamOS?

Yes, with limits. SteamOS 3.8 added installs on your own hardware with AMD graphics, still as a test channel; NVIDIA is not supported. Bazzite, a Fedora-based system built to feel like SteamOS, is the easier option and also supports NVIDIA cards.

Does the Steam Machine come with a controller?

Not at the base price. At launch, Valve listed the Steam Machine at $1,049 (512GB) and $1,349 (2TB) without a controller, and $1,128 and $1,428 with the new Steam Controller.

Will games with anti-cheat work on Bazzite or SteamOS?

Many will, but games that use kernel-level anti-cheat are generally incompatible with Linux. If you play those, keep Windows on the mini PC and use Steam’s Big Picture mode for the console feel.
