AMD’s 192GB Ryzen AI Halo Is Out: What It Means for Local AI Mini PCs
AMD has started selling a new version of its Ryzen AI Halo developer mini PC, built on the Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495 (“Gorgon Halo”) with 192GB of unified memory. The processor is almost unchanged from Strix Halo; the extra memory is the real news.
In short
The new Ryzen AI Halo has 192GB of memory instead of 128GB, with up to 160GB usable by the GPU, so AMD rates it for AI models of up to 300 billion parameters (200 billion before). CPU cores, graphics and power limit are the same. For most local AI buyers, 128GB Strix Halo mini PCs remain the sensible choice.
What AMD launched
A Linux developer mini PC with the Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495 and 192GB of LPDDR5x, orderable at Micro Center since October 12.
AMD announced the machine on its blog on October 12, pitching it as a ready-to-use box for local AI: “Plug it in, power it on, and get to your first token in minutes.” It ships with AMD’s ROCm software and a preloaded developer center of apps and models; Windows versions are “coming soon”. Notebookcheck reports a price of $7,299 for the 192GB, 2TB configuration at Micro Center, with 10 Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7 and four USB-C ports.
What changed from the 128GB version
Mainly the memory. The chip gains 100 MHz and a slightly faster NPU, but keeps 16 Zen 5 cores, a 40-unit Radeon GPU and a 120W default power limit.
| Spec | Ryzen AI Max+ 395 | Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495 |
|---|---|---|
| Unified memory | 128GB | 192GB |
| Largest model (AMD) | 200B parameters | 300B parameters |
| CPU | 16 cores, up to 5.1 GHz | 16 cores, up to 5.2 GHz |
| GPU | Radeon 8060S, 40 units | Radeon 8065S, 40 units |
| NPU | 50 TOPS | 55 TOPS |
Notebookcheck expects only about 5% more CPU speed from this chip. Minisforum, which showed an MS-S1 Max version with the same processor at IFA, lists LPDDR5X-8533 memory against 8000 on Strix Halo machines, about 7% more bandwidth, which is what limits token speed on large models.
What it means for buyers
Buy 192GB only if you need models above about 120B parameters or several large models at once. Otherwise a 128GB Strix Halo mini PC does the same work for much less.
On 128GB Strix Halo machines, published tests show GPT-OSS 120B running at about 31 to 54 tokens per second, as listed in our best mini PC for local AI guide. Speed per model will barely change on Gorgon Halo; what you gain is room. And with TrendForce forecasting another 10–15% rise in DRAM contract prices this quarter, don’t expect 192GB systems to get cheap soon. Our Strix Halo explainer covers how the memory is shared.
